Redirects / 404

Send old URLs to new ones (301 redirects). Redirects are created automatically when a post's URL changes, and URLs that were not found (404) are logged

Send visitors from old URLs to new ones

"Sorabun > Measure / Analyze > Redirects / 404" sends people and search engines that arrive at an old URL to the new one (a redirect). It is for Pro and administrators only, and does the same job as the Redirection plugin.

  • You changed a post's URL (slug)
  • You merged articles into one ("Merge" in the Existing Article Audit)
  • You restructured the site and the URL format changed

Without a redirect, the old URL shows "Not Found (404)", and links from other sites and search rankings go to waste.

Redirects are created automatically when a URL changes

When the slug, parent page or category (on sites whose permalinks include the category) of a published post changes its URL, a 301 redirect from the old URL is created automatically. These are labeled "URL change" in the list.

The redirect points to the post itself, so even if the URL changes again, every old URL goes to the latest one. Nothing is redirected once the post is deleted or made private.

Create a redirect

FieldHow to write it
Source URLLike /old-page/ (you can leave out the site URL). End it with * to redirect everything below it (for example /blog/*)
Target/new-page/ or a URL starting with https://. When the source ends with *, put * in the target to carry over the rest (for example /blog/* → /news/* sends /blog/2020/a to /news/2020/a)
TypeUsually 301 (moved permanently). Use 302 for limited-time campaigns. For a deleted page with no replacement, 410 (gone) makes search engines drop it sooner

Choose "Regular expression (advanced)" to write rules like ^/(\d{4})/(\d{2})/(.*)$ → /archive/$1/$3.

  • Rules are checked in this order: exact match, then * rules (most specific first), then regular expressions
  • By default, upper/lower case and a trailing / are ignored
  • Query strings like ?utm_source= on the old URL are carried over to the target
  • The admin screens, login and REST API are never redirected. The home page and /* (the whole site) cannot be redirected either

URLs that were not found (404)

URLs that were not found are listed by count, with the last time and the referring page. Starting with the most frequent, press "Create redirect" to open the form with the source filled in.

  • Requests that look like bot attacks (.php, .env, /wp-admin/ and so on) are not logged
  • Visitor IPs are not stored. Entries unseen for 90 days are removed, and at most 2,000 are kept

Import and export

  • CSV: one rule per line as "source URL, target, type". Without a type, 301 is used. CSV files saved from Excel work as is
  • From other plugins: if Redirection or Rank Math redirects exist, one button imports them (active ones only). Turn off the redirects in that plugin afterwards
